Sebastian Jauregui
Artist
Sebastian Jauregui (b.1995) is a Colombian-German artist and painter. After graduating in Fashion Design from the Royal College of Art in London, he devoted himself entirely to contemporary painting, where he blends elements of design with traditional painting techniques to create a distinctive visual language.
Jauregui’s current series is deeply personal, inspired by the superstitious habits of his mother, which were an integral part of his upbringing in a Colombian household in Germany. Growing up, these beliefs seemed trivial, but over time, he recognized them as powerful markers of cultural identity that vary significantly from one society to another. This body of work explores how superstitions serve as a lens through which different cultures attempt to make sense of the unknown.
Influenced by the refined color palettes and compositional styles of the Dutch masters of the 1700s, he subtly references his Colombian heritage through the integration of native fauna within distinctly European settings, creating a layered dialogue between cultural identity, contemporary practices and art history.
Through a dynamic combination of paintings, interactive installations, and sculptures, Jauregui reflects on the rituals and symbols that shape our understanding of luck, fate, and control. His work invites viewers to consider the cultural narratives we inherit and how these traditions continue to influence our lives in subtle, yet profound ways.
